Today it was announced that three former Scarlet Knights will no longer be suiting up for the football program going forward. Steve Shimko (Ewing, N.J.) and Aaron Hayward’s (Carney’s Point, N.J.) college football careers have been cut short due to injury. They will each be taking up roles as student assistants which will not count towards Rutgers scholarship limit. Therefore, Rutgers will be under the limit going into the 2011 season.

Shimko never fully recovered from shoulder surgery after last season while Hayward was plagued with a nagging knee injury. Although Shimko’s career at Rutgers is officially over, it is unclear as to whether Hayward could return to the field in the future after taking a medical redshirt this upcoming season.
Tight end Junior Solice (Hackensack, N.J.) will also no longer be a part of the team after his intentions to transfer were made official today. This his third year, Solice struggled to find time on either side of the football at Rutgers. Coming in as a defensive end, Solice leaves Rutgers as a tight end who struggled to find daylight at a position up for grabs.
On a more positive note, it was also announced that likely fullback starter, Edmond Laryea (Staten Island, N.Y.), has been granted his sixth year of football eligibility. He will be joining the team some time next week.
