RU Adds Duggan

Over the past few days, the Rutgers Football staff has been on a commitment streak as they have amassed six commitments in five days. For their sixth commitment, the Scarlet Knights addressed the inner defensive line with a commitment from defensive tackle Jaohne Duggan. The big DT caught the Rutgers' coach’s eye with two impressive performances at the Scarlet Knights’ on campus camps. Those two performances were enough for the staff to extend an offer earlier this week. It did not take long for Duggan to make a decision.
“I talked to Coach Burnham and Coach Ash. I just loved what they were telling me. They said that I can make an immediate impact as a freshman. They really invested time in me because they were calling every week. The way that they went about recruiting me made me feel appreciated”, stated Duggan. “I feel that I will fit in perfectly at Rutgers and everything is forming for them as a program”.
Although Duggan had been watching the streak of commitments to Rutgers, it did not affect his decision. In the end, it was purely the relationship and trust he built with the coaching staff.
“I did not pay attention to the rash of commitments. But I did see the posts on the Internet and the coaches were telling me. It did not make me commit to Rutgers sooner. It was really the coaches who I felt are for me 100%”, he said.
Although Duggan’s parents have yet to visit the Rutgers campus, they were impressed by what the Rutgers staff had to say about the school, support system and plan for their son.
“My parents love what the coaches were saying from the academic support to life after football. Everything what they said to my parents they were in agreement 100%”, he said.
At 6-foot-2 and 280-pounds with 4.8 forty speed, Duggan is destined for the interior of the defensive line. However, he has enough quickness and speed to garner some attention at defensive end. That determination will be made once he gets to campus. For now, the staff has him pegged for the 3 technique.
““I feel that I will bring a lot to Rutgers. I am really explosive off of the line, aggressive and disruptive”, stated Duggan. “Right now, they see me as a three tech but I will play anywhere that they can use me. I want to be as versatile as I can in that defense”.
Duggan’s performance at the Rutgers camp was impressive enough to have the news get to Penn State, Temple and Virginia Tech who worked through his high school coach to invite him to their camps.
“Recently, Temple, Penn State and Virginia Tech were trying to get me down to some camps. Before committing, I was planning on camping at Penn State and Virginia Tech in July. Penn State was talking through my head coach and recently started to text me”, he stated.
Although Duggan had some initial interest, the relationship built with the Rutgers coaches were enough for him to spurn their invitations and to pledge to the Scarlet Knights.
“Rutgers showed that they really wanted me there. While every other school was only now just contacting me now that my name is out there. I felt that their interest was not genuine so I did not pay them much mind. When Rutgers made the offer, it came so fast that I was not expecting it “, stated Duggan.
With his commitment behind him, Duggan will be focusing on the upcoming season and improving himself as a player. That journey will begin immediately as he will be hitting the gym hard to increasing his lean mass while keeping his quickness.
“Now that I am committed, I just plan on working on my craft for the rest of the summer. I working on getting even more explosive. It will be any and everything to get better at my all-around game”, he told StateOfRutgers.com.
In July, Duggan has a couple of trips scheduled back to Rutgers. Both return trips have him excited.
“On July 18th, I will be going down to Rutgers with my parents. We will be touring the campus. On July 30, I will be going back to Rutgers to meet up with a bunch of the recruits and the commits”
