Rising Fair Haven (N.J.) junior Elijah McAllister is racking up offers in a hurry, but the Scarlet Knights have made a strong impression on him. In a conversation on Friday afternoon, the highly-touted prospect told StateOfRutgers.com that he sees a lot of positives in the RU program.
"I like the coaching staff a lot. I like the coaches that they have brought in," McAllister said, specifically mentioning head coach Chris Ash by name. "They are by far the best coaching staff that I have talked to so far in the process and they contact me a lot. I like that."
To date, McAllister has ten offers and that number figures to increase sharply in the coming year. In addition to RU, schools like Tennessee, Virginia, UConn, Temple, Syracuse, Maryland, and Bowling Green have also invited McAllister to come aboard.
McAllister won't declare Rutgers as one of his favorites because he has yet to visit all of these schools. However, of the schools he has seen in person, McAllister confesses that Rutgers is his favorite. Not to put words in the youngster's mouth, but it is fair to say that Rutgers is an early favorite for this class of 2018 standout.
The Fair Haven star has caught the attention of recruiters from around the country for his play on both sides of the ball. As a difference-maker at both wide receiver and defensive end, where does McAllister intend on playing in college?
"It doesn't matter to me where I play. Really, all I want to do is what is best for my team and help them win. I like both positions," said the 6'6", 215 pound athlete, noting that Rutgers sees him as either a tight end or as a wide receiver.
Although he could be a wide receiver, McAllister figures his long term future is at either tight end or defensive end. The rising junior currently has a frame that is built for speed, but he knows that he must add some serious bulk in the next couple of years to play either position at the next level.
Although he has plenty of time before he has to decide on a school, McAllister tells StateOfRutgers.com that he intends to make his choice before the start of his senior season. Furthermore, McAllister wants to enroll early at whatever college he goes to, allowing him to get a leg up on competition on the football field.
McAllister's next visit to Rutgers will come on Saturday, October 8th when RU takes on Michigan on national TV.
